Find a Death Doula
Compassionate end-of-life support for families in Toronto and Montreal. A death doula walks beside you — guiding, comforting, and helping with the practical and emotional journey.
What Is a Death Doula?
A death doula — sometimes called an end-of-life doula — is a trained companion who supports individuals and families through the dying process and its aftermath. They are not medical professionals, but they fill the gaps that medicine often cannot: the emotional, spiritual, and deeply practical needs that arise when someone you love is nearing the end of life.
Think of them as a steady, warm presence during one of the most overwhelming times a family can face. They listen. They help you plan. They sit with you when words run out.
What to Expect
What a death doula does:
- Emotional support and active listening for the dying person and their family
- Vigil planning — creating a peaceful, meaningful environment in the final hours
- Legacy projects such as letters, memory books, or recorded stories
- Practical guidance: navigating funeral planning, paperwork, and next steps
- Family mediation and communication support during difficult conversations
- Grief support in the days and weeks that follow
What a death doula does not do:
- Medical care, nursing, or clinical assessments
- Medication administration or management
- Personal support work (bathing, lifting, feeding)
How Much Does It Cost?
Death doula fees in Canada typically range from $45 to $200+ per hour, depending on the doula's experience, the scope of support, and whether they offer packages or hourly rates.
Death doula services are not covered by OHIP or most private insurance plans at this time. However, many doulas offer sliding-scale fees or payment plans to make their support accessible to more families.
Some doulas offer a free initial consultation so you can get a sense of whether it feels like the right fit before committing.
