About Neshama

Why we built this

Nichum Aveilim

In Jewish tradition, nichum aveilim — comforting the mourner — is one of the most sacred obligations we carry. It is not merely a kindness; it is a commandment. When someone in our community passes away, showing up matters.

But showing up begins with knowing. In a city as large as Toronto, with multiple funeral homes serving the Jewish community, it can be difficult to learn about a passing in time to attend a funeral, pay a shiva call, or simply send a message of comfort.

What Neshama Does

Neshama gathers obituary information from Toronto's Jewish funeral homes and presents it in a single, respectful feed. We believe that when the community can easily find this information, more people show up — at funerals, during shiva, and in the quiet moments after.

Every name that appears on Neshama represents a life lived. A parent, a grandparent, a friend, a teacher. Our role is simply to make sure the community knows, so the community can respond.

Our Values

Respect. Every piece of information is presented with dignity. We do not editorialize, rank, or sensationalize.

Accuracy. We source information directly from funeral home websites and present it faithfully.

Privacy. We only display information that funeral homes have already made public. We comply with Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA).

Community. Neshama exists to strengthen the bonds between us. When one family mourns, we all stand with them.

Independent Service

Neshama is an independent project and is not affiliated with any funeral home. Information is aggregated from publicly available sources. If you notice an error or wish to have information removed, please contact us and we will respond promptly.
