Life & Legacy

LEVY, Earl Joseph QC, - July 1, 1937 - May 6, 2026. Much loved husband of Michele Weiss Atlin. Beloved father and father-in-law of Justin and Kate, Annaliese, and Skylar and Sammy. Fond step-father of Dov and Elissa, Wendy and Todd, and Bram and Erin. Dear brother and brother- in-law of Stephen and Ria. Devoted Papa of Griffin, and Ella Levy; Sloane Richard; Rylan, and Shayne Atlin; and Willa and Loudon Atlin. For over 50 years, Earl was the consummate criminal defense lawyer. Law was his passion. He was instrumental in helping with the inception of Legal Aid and going before Parliament to abolish capital punishment. Too many innocents had been executed. Earl was the longest serving president of Criminal Lawyer's Association for six years, as well as being a bencher. He travelled across Canada lecturing on criminal law. He was the recipient of Osgoode Hall's Lifetime Achievement Award and the first practicing lawyer to receive the prestigious G. Arthur Martin medal. He generously mentored countless young lawyers who remember him with gratitude. He authored "Examination Of Witnesses In Criminal Cases", now in it's 7th edition. Beyond all that, Earl was a voracious reader of thrillers, loved going to the movies, loved classical music and enjoyed travelling the world. But best of all for him was a scotch wash martini and a good cigar amongst family and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, principles, intellect, irreverent humour and a life-well-lived. Silver Fox, rest in peace. Memorial donations may be made to Weizmann Canada 1-800-387-3894 https://www.weizmann.ca/.
