Sheldon Kates

Sheldon "Shelly" Kates - Passed away on March 31, 2026, at the age of 77. Born in Toronto on February 4, 1949, Shelly grew up in the Kensington Market area before later settling in Thornhill, where he raised his family. He is survived by his wife, Franceen Kates; his children, Beth (Ben), Lorne (Heather), and Ira (Lisa); and his cherished grandchildren, Aaron, Molly, Dorothy, Declan, and Abraham. He is also survived by his sister, Shayna Swartz (Barry) and his nieces and nephew. He was predeceased by his parents, Solly and Ida Kates. Shelly was a lifelong fan of the Toronto Argonauts and had a major interest in sports memorabilia. He was a regular in the collecting community and was known for his knowledge and dedication to the hobby. He had a great sense of humour and had a steady supply of cheesy dad jokes to share. He will be remembered by family, friends, and those who knew him through his shared interests. Other Information: The family will welcome visits in the Common Room at (address not shown), Thornhill, on Sunday following the interment until 4:00 pm and then 7:00 to 9:00 pm, continuing Monday and Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Visits will conclude Tuesday evening, April 7th.
